FSC-Certified Teak Decking,
Teak Countertops, Teak Lumber
…and More

Matt Berk of Richmond, Virginia's EcoSupply Center has a lot of experience with sustainable surfacing products, and leads up a team that possesses an impressive background in design. The company distributes some of the industry's most innovative materials: Suberra Cork, Plyboo bamboo, Richlite cladding, Kirei board, and more.

Yet the growing popularity of one product line has opened up some surprising new possibilities for EcoSupply. “What seems to be selling very fast for us now is our Proteak product,” said Berk. “We're mainly countertop, sheet goods, and interior casework guys, but suddenly we're selling a lot of their decking and raw lumber.”

Proteak produces plantation-grown teakwood from their own FSC-certified forest properties in western Mexico. Initially, they limited their product selection to butcher-block countertops and butcher blocks, with good initial success. As the company's timberland matured, they were able to FSC-certified decking wood as well.

Featuring a golden-brown grain pattern, Proteak decking shows a little more ‘character' than the teak favored by traditional ship builders, but it performs just as well outdoors. It's naturally water resistant, termite resistant, and mold resistant, with the superior dimensional stability of many tropical hardwoods. Its higher silica content makes it naturally slip resistant as well.

EcoSupply has been supplying Proteak as an alternative to ipe. “It's been just flying off the shelves,” Berk reports. It's a product you can pitch to architects because it's an FSC wood with a unique look, and the price points are very good relative to some similar products that are out there.”

EcoSupply supplies Proteak to most of the eastern U.S.
