Bamboo Dimensional Lumber
LumBoo™ from U.S. supplier Cali Bamboo becomes the world's first engineered bamboo dimensional lumber. Made from 100% compressed bamboo, the product is composed of large poles that have been shredded into strips and configured into a matrix optimized for structural integrity. Once the bamboo matrix is built, a low VOC resin is added and the bamboo is placed into a hydraulic press which compresses the material at several hundred thousand pounds of force. The result is an extremely dense bamboo block and is nearly indestructible. The bamboo block is then milled and sanded into products such as 4x4s, 2x4s, 2x6s, and their ranch-style post & rail system.
The resulting product is an extremely hard wood that may in many ways perform like some tropical hardwoods. In other words, pre-drilling is recommended when working with fasteners, and a sharp, high speed mitre blade will be the preferred choice for sawing. Bamboo is typically termite resistant and also resists other forms of rot common to exposed softwoods.
