Healthier choices in Low-VOC coatings

Taking out the volatile organic compounds is only the start…

Back in colonial times, architectural paints were made using dairy and egg solids for the binder, vegetable-based dyes for color, and commonly available mineral compounds as the biocide. Our forebears weren't environmentalists; they simply used the materials in their environment. Those kinds of products were the norm until the advent of cheap petrochemicals late in the industrial revolution.

Now a new coatings brand aims to reclaim that ‘natural' technology with a few 21st century enhancements. EcoTrend Collagen Paint utilizes a unique collagen binder derived from the lining of ordinary eggshells. As it happens, the eggshells used in EcoTrend qualify as post-industrial recycled material, because they're recovered as waste from a commercial bakery.

The Eco-Trend recipe is quite different from other paints in other ways as well. The resin is 100% acrylic, but it's a bio-sourced amino-acrylic, according to Mike Owens, the company's president. And instead of conventional fungicides, mildewcides, biocides, and preservatives, EcoTrend uses powdered silver and aluminum oxide to prevent mold and mildew formation. There's also a mineral additive for generating negative ions to further enhance indoor air quality.

The product can be applied by brush, roller, or sprayer, and forms a smooth finish that is touch-dry in about one hour – without any toxic outgassing or noticeable odor. Thanks to the collagen, the paint flows smoothly, adheres well, and touches up cleanly. It's available in 3 sheens and 4 bases, plus a primer. Like most paint brands, it has its own color cards, but it can also be tinted to match other popular brands. The company claims that it can provide one coat coverage from pastel through deep base colors. For now, EcoTrend is only available as an interior coating.

Positioned as a premium paint, EcoTrend also arrives with an impressive green resume. Its label sports a large Greenguard Certified Seal, and it has also earned Greenguard for Children & Schools certification. The paint is VOC-free and also free of formaldehyde and phthalates. In addition, the product has passed ASTM G21 testing for fungus and mildew resistance.

The recommended opening order is as low as 132 gallons. Initially, the product is being imported from Asia, but there are plans to establish manufacturing facilities in North America soon.

Non-toxic VOC-free exterior paint line

Mythic Exterior Paint is a line of high performance coatings that provides easy application, solid adhesion, and superior coverage to previously painted or primed surfaces such as vinyl, aluminum siding, wood siding, masonry, shutters, fencing, and hardboard. The coatings can be applied by brush, roller, airless, or HVLP spray systems. After the paint has dried and cured, it forms a vapor permeable barrier that is mold and mildew resistant and also resists stains. Users can select from over 1,200 colors in the Mythic palette, or their dealer can quickly mach color formulas for other popular paint brands. It's available in flat, satin, and semi-gloss sheens.

The product line contains no VOCs, no formaldehyde, no crystalline silicates, and is free of other toxins, allergins, and carcinogens – and is considered safe for the chemically sensitive. The entire Mythic line is Green Wise certified and qualifies for credit under the LEED and NAHB-Green standards.

A complete variety of in-store and salesperson merchandising aids and color tools is available.
