Philips EnduraLED bulb
earns the ENERGY STAR label

by Rob Petit, Associate Editor

The Philips EnduraLED 12.5 watt A-19 light bulb lasts 25 times longer and uses 80 percent less energy than the 60-watt incandescent it was designed to replace. Those specs are key reasons the product has become the first 60-watt LED equivalent to earn the ENERGY STAR label. To earn that distinction, a 60-watt LED equivalent must have a minimum light output of 800 lumens, a color temperature of 2700K (for soft white light), color rendering index (CRI) of 80 and a minimum three year warranty, among other requirements.

Philips' EnduraLED line includes 25, 40 and 60-watt LED A-shape equivalents that are high-efficiency, soft white-light alternatives to incandescent lighting. The dimmable 60-watt bulb has a rated average life of 17 years, and comes with a six year warranty. Projected energy savings for commerical users over that lifespan would amount to roughly $125 at today's rates. The same product is available for residential users under the AmbientLED name, with retail prices ranging from $70 to less than $40,

According to Philips, the product's LUXEON LEDs - combined with its unique design utilizing remote phosphor technology - allow the bulbs to cast light in all directions with the same soft-white glow of the familiar incandescent lamps. “We build all of our lighting products with quality and standards in mind, and our ENERGY STAR label is validation of that approach,” said Ed Crawford, General Manager of Lamps for Philips Lighting North America.

“This LED bulb represents an important milestone for the lighting industry and for LED adoption," Crawford added, "as it will give utilities the confidence to support proven energy saving products like the Philips EnduraLED and help encourage consumer adoption.”
